about me, blog challenge

31-Day Blog Challenge | day 27

Today’s prompt is a nice, warm and fuzzy one. What makes me feel better, always. There’s a lot of emphasis on self-care lately and this is a perfect self-care post.

What makes me feel better can vary depending on what’s making me feel bad in the first place. I could be ill or stressed or sad, and the thing I need would change slightly. But they are all along the same theme.

The ability to rest up and do my own thing is a great way to feel better. If I’m feeling stressed about deadlines or if the housework/kids are overwhelming me, or if I’m feeling under the weather the best thing I can do is stop. Stop working – which as a stay at home parent is easier said than done – and indulge in one of my many hobbies.

A nice hot shower or bath is another great way to feel better. When you’re not well or are having a down day and stay in your PJs past noon, you can start to feel a bit grimy. The feeling of getting clean can literally wash away the funk. Also, if you’re bunged up the steam can help.

A lot of people might list eating chocolate or other junk foods as a way to indulge and feel better, but I always feel worse after eating junk. Without sounding like a health guru, you should ‘treat’ your body with healthy food and water, and while I don’t get as much good stuff as I should, I always feel better when I do.

I’m not very much of a people person, so spending time with people won’t appear on this list. That is, people other than my kids. Even when I’m pulling my hair out at them for one reason or another, they always find a way to brighten my day.

Another health guru-type cliche is exercise. I might not love exercise in itself, but I LOVE the feeling you get afterwards. Nothing beats it! Running is a great way to clear your mind, and escape the stress for a short time, plus it’s followed by that buzz. I do miss weight training too.

From making this list it’s clear to see that, for me at least, the things that make me feel better are mostly healthy habits for the body. So I guess that my mental health is closely linked to my physical health. Stress/comfort eating isn’t exactly a new phenomenon.

As I write this, it’s the last weekend of the school Easter holidays. I’m looking forward to getting back into my healthy habits and feeling better for it next week. I always eat better and exercise more when I have a better routine.
